For most independents, points tied to the customer's phone number in the POS: no card to lose, no app to download, and a report showing what loyalty costs. A paper card is fine for a brand-new cafe that wants zero setup.
The classic is 'buy nine, get the tenth free', which is a 10% reward on drink spend. Many cafes run 8–12 visits. With points you can express the same thing as a spend threshold.
