Running a cafe POS in Pakistan: power cuts, mobile wallets and Urdu receipts

How Pakistani cafes keep a cloud POS running through load-shedding, record JazzCash and Easypaisa payments, print Urdu receipts and handle provincial sales tax.

Key takeaways

  • A UPS on the router and printer plus a 4G backup keeps a cloud POS running through load-shedding.
  • Record JazzCash, Easypaisa and bank transfers as payment types so reports match accounts.
  • Set provincial sales tax as a tax group; check real-time reporting rules for your category.

Pakistani cafes run on a mix that most POS software was never designed for: cash and mobile wallets in one bill, Urdu-speaking counter staff, and the occasional hour without power. Here is how cafes set up a cloud POS to cope.

Keeping the register running through load-shedding

A cloud POS needs a connection to save sales. The fix is cheap:

  1. Tablets ride through on battery. Keep them charged between rushes.
  2. Put the router and printer on a UPS. A small unit covers most outages.
  3. Keep a 4G backup. A 4G device or a phone hotspot takes over if the line drops; switching takes under a minute.

We do not claim an offline mode; this setup is what our onboarding team recommends to every Pakistani cafe.

Recording every way customers pay

Customers pay with cash, bank cards, JazzCash, Easypaisa, Raast or bank transfer — sometimes several in one bill. In GetCafePOS:

  • Add each wallet as a payment method.
  • Use split payments so one bill can be part cash, part JazzCash.
  • At close, the register report shows totals per method, so you can reconcile with wallet statements.

The money moves through the wallet providers, not through the POS; the POS keeps the record.

Urdu at the counter and on the receipt

Staff can run the register in Urdu or English, per user. Receipts can print in Urdu, English or both, with Urdu laid out right-to-left in a Nastaliq-capable font.

Sales tax: provincial rules

Restaurant and cafe services are generally taxed by the provinces (for example Sindh and Punjab sales tax on services) or under Islamabad Capital Territory law. In the POS:

  • Create a tax group with your applicable rate.
  • Print your NTN/STRN on receipts.
  • Ask your tax advisor whether your category must report sales to the tax authority in real time, and tell us before buying if it does.

Prices on getcafepos.com for Pakistan are shown before applicable sales tax.

A menu that mixes chai and espresso

Karak, doodh patti, cold coffee and lattes sit on the same menu. Use modifier sets for sugar levels, milk and size, route bakery items to the kitchen, and put the top sellers on the first screen.

Getting found

Instagram and WhatsApp drive discovery. Put your order-ahead link in your bio, answer catering enquiries on WhatsApp, and print the link as a QR code at the counter.

The setup checklist

Questions about this topic

Answered by the Cafe Operations Desk team. Can’t find yours? Ask us.

Can a cloud POS work with load-shedding in Pakistan?

Yes, with preparation: tablets run on battery, a small UPS keeps the router and printer alive, and a 4G device covers internet outages. The register needs a connection to save sales, so the backup line matters.

How do I record JazzCash and Easypaisa payments?

Add them as payment methods in the POS. Staff select the method at checkout; the closing report shows totals per method so you can reconcile with your wallet statements.

Can receipts be printed in Urdu?

Yes. Receipts can be Urdu, English or both, with Urdu laid out right-to-left.

Which sales tax applies to cafes in Pakistan?

Cafe and restaurant services are generally taxed under provincial sales tax on services (Sindh, Punjab, KP, Balochistan) or in Islamabad Capital Territory under its own law. Rates and reporting rules differ; ask your tax advisor.

Does GetCafePOS integrate with FBR or provincial tax systems?

We do not claim a certified integration. If your category must report sales in real time, talk to us before buying.
